MARS received and cared for two injured Pileated Woodpeckers in June, 2020. They are beautiful birds with fascinating adaptations.
Pileated Woodpeckers are a keystone species, meaning other wildlife depend on them. The nest holes they make and use only one year become nest and roosting spaces other woodpeckers, owls and other birds, squirrels, and racoons. One hole can be reused over decades.
